Gemstone Feature: Alexandrite

By All

Alexandrite was discovered in 1830 in Russia’s Ural Mountains and is one of the rarest gemstones to source, particularly in large sizes. Because of its scarcity, alexandrite is a relatively expensive member of the chrysoberyl family. It shares its status as a June birthstone with cultured pearl and moonstone.

  • Mineral: Chrysoberyl
  • Chemistry: BeAl2O4
  • Color: Bluish green in daylight, purplish red in incandescent light
  • Refractive Index: 1.746 to 1.755
  • Birefringence: 0.008 to 0.010
  • Specific Gravity: 3.73
  • Mohs Hardness: 8.5

Alexandrite, with its chameleon-like qualities, is a rare variety of the mineral chrysoberyl.

Its color can be a lovely green in daylight or fluorescent light, changing to brownish or purplish red in the incandescent light from a lamp or candle flame. This is a result of the complex way the mineral absorbs light.

Alexandrite is also a strongly pleochroic gem, which means it can show different colors when viewed from different directions.

Antique jewellery remodelling to last a lifetime

By All

We have over 100 years’ experience at Artisans Bespoke Jewellers and over the years have remodelled many antique jewellery pieces. The metal in jewellery passed down from generation to generation can be gradually worn down from general wear and tear over time. From this, we have seen clients come in with broken jewellery or loose gems that have fallen out of their settings.

Thankfully at Artisans Bespoke Jewellers, we are able to breathe new life into these pieces by handcrafting and reinforcing the design so that you can cherish these pieces for many more years to come. We can easily keep with the era style of your piece or put a modern twist to it – skies the limit!

Our team of talented jewellery craftsman love hearing the story behind your family’s treasures and being a part of the whole process. Come in store to book your complimentary jewellery design consultation and find out more about our passion for remodeling.

Last year we raised over $11,000 and this year raised the bar higher and raised $14,000. We would like to say a big THANK YOU to all of our sponsors who donated to this wonderful event.

How to clean & maintain your jewellery

By All

A quick way to clean your jewellery is to give it a bubble bath in warm water and liquid detergent. Using a soft head toothbrush, gently brush away any built up dirt on top and underneath. For stubborn dirt, give your pieces a longer soak. Rinse with warm clear water and gently dry in a dabbing motion.

Try to use tissue paper as this will limit any fabric lint or dust getting caught in the setting.

To help maintain the strength and longevity of your rings and to prevent any gems from falling out, be sure to take your jewellery off before doing any manual labour or a gym workout.
