Illuminating Discovery: Artisans Bespoke Jewellers Collaborates with Fashion Queensland and UQ Institute of Molecular Bioscience

In celebration of the University of Queensland Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB)’s 25th Anniversary, Artisans Bespoke Jewellers was honoured to collaborate with Fashion Queensland to create and donate a one-of-a-kind bangle titled “Luminara” (Latin for light).

The commission was crafted as part of the IMB 25th Anniversary Gala to raise vital funds for IMB’s pioneering scientific research, uniting artistry, science, and purpose in a meaningful expression of shared creativity.

The Story Behind “Luminara”

Luminara was inspired by confocal microscopy image by IMB’s T. Chau of Lymphatic Skin Tissue — a stunning visualisation of cellular structures that protect and sustain life in vibrant hues of Yellow, Oranges, Purple and Pinks.

Translating this scientific imagery into jewellery form, our award-winning team transformed the intricate cellular lace patterns into precious metal, symbolising resilience, discovery, and the elegance of life itself.

Handcrafted in 18ct yellow and white gold, the bangle is hand-set with 54 natural round brilliant-cut diamonds with a total diamond weight of 0.485ct. Weighing 40grams, the piece represents not only the beauty of its materials but the enduring worth of human creativity and collaboration.

The articulated lace-like patterns on the bangle move gently on the wrist when worn, echoing IMB’s mission to bring science to life — dynamic, intricate, and ever-evolving.

A Celebration of Collaboration

According to Wendy Mansell, from the UQ Institute of Molecular Bioscience, “The 25th Anniversary was an opportunity to celebrate IMB’s transformative journey — from visionary beginnings to a world-leading institute driving discoveries that change lives.”

The Luminara bangle, she explains, “perfectly captured the spirit of the evening — uniting science and art in a shared expression of creativity, curiosity, and impact.” Guests at the gala were captivated by both its craftsmanship and story, sparking conversations about the beauty of science and the power of collaboration. The piece was ultimately purchased by a passionate IMB supporter as a gift for their loved one — a symbolic gesture that beautifully echoed the evening’s theme of connection and discovery.

Dr Nicholas Condon, Senior Principal Imaging Scientist at IMB, reflected:

“Scientists and artists/designers are driven by curiosity and a shared passion for examining the world through different lenses. Luminara reimagines the intricate beauty we observe in our molecular world. We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Tammy and her talented team in this way.”

Empowering the Future of Discovery

Funds raised from the Luminara auction contributed to the establishment of the IMB Scholarship Fund, which will empower the next generation of scientists to pursue world-changing discoveries. From antibiotic resistance and chronic disease to sustainable agriculture, these research efforts aim to tackle some of the most pressing global challenges — embodying the same spirit of dedication and craft that defines every piece made at Artisans.

“Artisans was thrilled to help contribute to raising funds for IMB’s important life-changing work”, said Tammy Keers.

Artisans’ Commitment to Purposeful Craftsmanship

For our team, Luminara was more than a jewellery commission — it was a celebration of shared values: curiosity, craftsmanship, and contribution. As artisans, we believe every piece we create should tell a story and make a difference. This collaboration stands as a testament to the power of creativity to illuminate and inspire, just as IMB continues to illuminate the unseen wonders of science.
