2. Diamond or Coloured Gemstone Selection

We help you choose the centre stone for your ring, whether that is a natural diamond or a carefully selected coloured gemstone.

We consider shape, size, colour, clarity, sparkle and overall beauty, helping you find a stone that suits both the design, the wearer and budget.

Diamonds: Treasures of Time

Every diamond is unique. Each reflects the story of its arduous journey from deep inside the earth to a cherished object of adornment. A diamond is a testament of endurance and strength – and not surprising one of the ultimate symbols of love.
All diamonds share certain features that them to be compared and evaluated. At Artisans Bespoke Jewellers, we call them the 6Cs.

Colour
The colour scale for diamonds extends from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown).
Colour grades are determined by comparing each diamond to a master set. Although many people think of diamonds as colourless, truly colourless diamonds are actually very rare. Most diamonds used in jewellery are nearly colourless with tints of yellow or brown.

Clarity
The Diamond Clarity scale includes 11 grades from Flawless to i3. Because diamonds form under tremendous heat and pressure, it is extremely rare to find a natural diamond that lacks any internal and external characteristics.

Cut
A Diamond cut ranges from excellent to poor. A polished diamond’s beauty lies in its complex relationship with light: how light strikes the surface, how much enters the diamond and how, and in what form light returns to the eye.

Carat Weight
One carat equals 200 millgrams in weight. For diamonds under one carat, each carat is divided into 100 points – similar to cents in a dollar. 0.75ct equals 75 points, ½ ct equals 50 points and so on.

Care and Confidence
We help build confidence by taking the time to carefully provide a diamond education to our clients. We stand by the fact that each of our diamonds are natural and ethically sourced. Just like each diamond is unique, each person has their own unique taste and preferences and we are here to guide you through the process.

Coloured Gemstones: Mother Nature’s Candy

Artisans Bespoke Jewellers are well-known for working specifically with coloured gemstones to create one-of-a-kind Engagement rings. Natural coloured gemstones such as Sapphires and Spinels are perfect for engagement rings as they exude character, meaning and individuality. Collaborating and working from our clients vision, each gemstone is thoughtfully hand-picked for its colour, shape, size and suitability for everyday wear. When it comes to choosing a coloured gemstone for an Engagement ring here are the different aspects for everything stone that is assessed for our clients.

Colour
Colour is one of the most important factors. We look at the tone, depth, saturation and overall beauty of the colour — whether it is a soft pastel, deep romantic hue or vivid statement shade.

Cut
The cut affects how the gemstone reflects light and shows its colour. A well-cut gemstone will bring out the best of the stone’s natural beauty, enhancing its brilliance, shape and overall presence in the ring.

Clarity
Coloured gemstones often have natural inclusions, which are part of their character. Rather than looking for a perfectly flawless stone, we consider whether the gemstone appears beautiful to the eye and whether any inclusions affect its strength or wearability.

Size
Size refers to the gemstone’s weight, but different gemstones can appear larger or smaller depending on their shape, depth and density. We consider both carat weight and visual size to ensure the gemstone suits the ring design and the wearer’s hand.

Durability
Not all coloured gemstones are suitable for everyday wear. For engagement rings, we carefully consider it’s hardness on the MOHs scale and how the stone will last over time. Stones such as sapphires and spinels are popular choices because they offer both beauty and durability for everyday wear.

Shape
The shape of the gemstone influences the overall style of the ring. Oval, round, cushion, emerald cut, pear and unique freeform shapes can each create a very different look and feel, depending on the ring design. We select gemstone shapes that complement the client’s vision and the final design.

Origin
Some coloured gemstones are valued for their origin, rarity or unusual colour. These details can add meaning and individuality to the ring, making the final piece feel even more special.

Suitability for Design
Every gemstone is unique, so the ring should be designed around the stone. We consider the gemstone’s proportions, colour, setting style and how it will be protected in the finished ring, ensuring the final piece is both beautiful and practical for everyday wear.

3. Ring Design

Once the main central stone is selected, we design the ring around it. It’s very important that the centre stone is chosen first before designing the rest of the ring as the centre stone sets the ‘tone’ for the whole ring, particularly when it comes to the setting style, band shape, side stones, fine details and how the ring will sit on the hand. Every detail is considered for beauty, comfort and everyday wear.
